Podcast listneners! Thanks so much for tuning in for another episode of Digging Deep. Today it's just me in the studio as it is sweltering. Speaking of hot topics, this week I wanted to talk a bit about Marketing with Cultural Integrity. As marketers it is often so common to think about including cultural diversity in our work. Whether in photos or videos we always seem to want to put in a minority person just so it seems "acceptable."
To me personally, I don't believe or subscribe to this thinking. While we try to fight on our production side to either do it with integrity or don't do it at all, we often come up against the argument that they want to be culturally sensitive.
The truth is, marketing is always about specific marketing. But it needs to go beyond just putting an ethnic face or saying you stand with some political or social standpoint. Marketers need to ask deeper questions surrounding the very people they say they want to attract. Not just for a statistic and definitely not just to hop onto some bandwagon trend.
It is our moral obligation to use our voices to ask deeper questions on how can we bridge gaps and truly invite the world into our story and us into theirs. We have the ability to build creative around the social narrative and to ensure that we encompass all ethnic, social, gender and human rights. We are a human species. While we have variations in all aspects, it should not distract us from seeing each other as equals.
So on this Canada Day, celebrate Canada. A country that leads the world in acceptance. While there is much to work on, heal and learn I am still proud to be a Canadian.
